Even as many news crews and aid agencies have pulled out of West, TX, Somebody Cares and its network of partners continues to support the long-term recovery process.
Through several churches in the Waco and West areas, some that partnered with us during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, a Waco Disaster Relief Network has been set up to oversee the distribution of nearly $40,000 worth of gift cards and other donations to 283 families in West that are still in need of help. 120 homes and 50 apartments were completely destroyed and 63 homes and 5 apartments were severely damaged.
Your donations are already helping! One pastor lost his entire home, as did some of his congregants. And yet, the very next day they put boots to the ground and opened their church as a central point of distribution and information in the wake of the explosion. Thanks to you, we are able to help meet that church’s needs.
Many families were simply not insured for the high cost of damages the explosion caused, being under-insured by tens
of thousands of dollars so without additional support they will not be able to fully recover. Our partner churches in the area are doing what they can but the needs are great!
Others families are dealing with high medical bills due to injuries caused by the explosion. Your donations are helping people like Tom*, who’s left eye was severely impacted in the explosion and lost function. Somebody Cares was able to help Tom get needed surgery and medical attention.
