SOMEBODY CARES HELPS “LIFT UP” HOUSTON

God bless you all!” Stefan Townsend brought this note with him when he came to be fitted for a new hearing aid at the Somebody Cares America offices on Monday, June 5, as part of Lift Up America’s kick-off to the “Giving Hope Tour.” The hearing aids were donated by the Starkey Foundation, which fitted hearing aids for 94 individuals, most of them children.
Somebody Cares was contacted by Lift Up America earlier this year to facilitate the Houston event. Partnering with Magda Hermida Ministries, Christian Alliance, Communities in Schools, and local churches and ministries, Somebody Cares helped identify children in need of hearing aids and eyeglasses. SCA also recruited volunteers for grocery sorting and distribution and oversaw on-ground logistics.
The highlight of the event was the local premier on Tuesday, June 6, of Meet Me In Miami, a romantic comedy produced by Servant Productions. Children who received eyeglasses and hearing aids, along with their families, entered the theatre on a red carpet, some of them transported by limousine. They were greeted by stars from the movie, including popular Hispanic actor Eduardo Verastegui and actress Tara Leniston.
One mother who brought her son for hearing aids on Monday and came to the movie on Tuesday was in tears as she shared the difference it made in her son’s hearing. “Tyler has had hearing aids since he was 18 months old,” she said. “We can’t afford to buy them, so we only get them when they are donated.
“These new hearing aids have already made such a difference! He came home last night and started calling all his friends to say, ‘Guess what! I can hear!’” Other Lift Up America partners included Tyson Foods, Luxotica Group Foundation and “Give the Gift of Sight,” Interstate Battery, and Ty Toys.
“We could not have done this without the help of Somebody Cares,” said David Hannah, CEO of Lift Up America. That sentiment was echoed by respresentatives from the Starkey Foundation as well. Ruben Sanchez from Somebody Cares served as the local director for the event. “It was an honor for us to partner with these organizations. Being a tangible expression of Christ by helping the less fortunate is what Somebody Cares is all about.”
