Hurricane Melissa is tearing across the Caribbean, leaving widespread devastation in its wake.
After battering Jamaica yesterday with 185 mph Category 5 winds, torrential rain, and catastrophic flooding, the powerful storm has set its sights on Cuba and the Bahamas.
In Jamaica, communities in parishes such as St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland have been especially hard hit. Homes and schools are flattened, roads washed out, and hospitals damaged. Power and communication lines are down in many areas, leaving families cut off and desperate for help. The full scope of the destruction is still unknown. But entire towns are now facing the overwhelming task of survival and recovery.
As the storm continues its deadly path, SOMEBODY CARES partners have already mobilized.
Our network partner response team from CRI will depart for Jamaica tomorrow, Thursday, aboard a small private aircraft to deliver set up a base camp and coordinate relief.
We are also in constant contact with SC Caribbean leaders, receiving real-time assessments of conditions and needs across multiple islands so that we can respond swiftly and strategically.
