| In the Bumble Bee Hills neighborhood of Hunt, Texas, hope is being rebuilt one home—and one heart—at a time. Since the Fourth of July flood devastated the area, the outpouring of compassion has been extraordinary.
More than 2,900 volunteers have given over 10,000 hours of their time to help families rebuild their homes and their lives. Their hands have cleared debris, hung drywall, installed flooring, painted walls, and, most importantly, brought comfort and encouragement to those who lost so much. According to national nonprofit standards, the value of this volunteer service exceeds $2.7 million—but the true worth is measured in the smiles, tears, and prayers shared along the way. In the past month, Mercury One, a key financial partner (see video above), and Heart Response from Minneapolis (see photos below) both sent volunteer teams to serve in the restoration efforts. Heart Response has also delivered several truckloads of construction materials—including windows, doors, and flooring—in the months since the flood occurred. Thanks to this incredible team effort, two homes are already reoccupied by their owners, with several more nearing completion. Some families who were told they might be displaced for up to a year are now preparing to move home before the holidays. “We have an awesome team doing some amazing work in Bumble Bee Hills,” said Doug Stringer, founder of Somebody Cares America. “These volunteers are the hands and feet of Jesus—sharing the love of God in real, tangible ways.” SCA’s goal is to complete 10 restored homes by November 1. As Thanksgiving approaches, SCA is also partnering with Burnt Offerings BBQ and other local friends to host a community-wide Thanksgiving meal on Saturday, November 22—a celebration of gratitude and God’s faithfulness. Volunteers will again help prepare and serve food, creating a space where the community can come together, give thanks, and feel the love of God.
