Our Guest: John Benjamin Jones

John Benjamin Jones is a retired Senior Federal Air Marshal. With a total of 31 years of service, Mr. Jones began his career as a United States Navy Hospital Corpsman (FMF), spending much of his time assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines at Camp Pendleton CA, where he served with the Selective Target Acquisition (STA) team and Raider Company. During this tenure, he engaged in combat operations in Somalia.

Following his military service, Mr. Jones began his law enforcement career with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department in Omaha NE, followed by positions with the Veterans Affairs Police and Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS).

For the duration of his time with FAMS, Mr. Jones was assigned as a Federal Agent, working domestic and international counter-terrorism-related missions out of the Los Angeles Field Office.

Over the course of his FAMS career, he deployed on countless international missions, logging 4,000,000 air miles while conducting Top Secret (TS) high-level security-related missions worldwide. He was assigned to the Training Division, where he was responsible for all aspects of in-service tactical training, firearms training, fighting techniques, and more.

But it was his specialty in traumatic medicine that led him to serve as the division lead instructor for medical training for active-duty Federal Air Marshals on mission status.

John retired as a Senior Federal Air Marshal in 2023, has been a financial professional, is a counselor-in-training, and is the published author of the book, A Higher Calling: A Biblical Guide for First Responders, Military, and Veterans.

Scriptures and Key Points from John’s story:

  • Even out of hardship, you still show up because you’re called to it.
  • “I was doing all these things on my own, and I wasn’t good at it.
  • John’s challenges led him to the Father.
  • We learn to rely on God through our adversities.
  • And He shows Himself greater than what we are going through.

Proverbs 24:17 ESV Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles

  • “Reach out and touch someone.”
  • As we reach out to others, we can find our healing.
  • It’s a matter of trust.
  • Many first responders face combat-like trauma on a daily basis.
  • They often feel responsible for shielding their families from the trauma, but in doing so, it can create a wedge within their relationships.
  • But they do need to share that they have experienced trauma.
  • Wisdom isn’t always what we do right, but rather if we can learn from our mistakes.
  • Every life experience becomes a life lesson. Which in turn can become our life message.
  • John’s life arc was not planned.
  • We need to recognize the benefits of life’s unexpected turns.
  • See God’s goodness in preparing us for who He has called us to be.
