“Pictures never can really show you the reality of things,” said Mark Roye, part of our team on the ground in the Texas Hill Country following the deadly flood that hit unexpectedly just a week ago. “Seeing houses that were flooded with six feet of water and all the belongings of the homeowners out on the curb is something you never get used to. But being able to help start the journey of recovery for this community in Hunt, Texas, is a blessing.'”
Somebody Cares America has worked alongside CRI as they have coordinated hundreds of volunteers–nearly 250 today alone–to gut homes in preparation for rebuilding and repairs. Four homes have been completely gutted down to the studs and will be ready for sheet rock as soon as they are dry.
“The depth of heartbreak is staggering,” said SCA’s Corey Stark. “Families are grieving the loss of loved ones. Entire neighborhoods have been washed away. But together with hundreds of volunteers and ministries from across the country, we are witnessing the Body of Christ rise to be the heart and hands of Jesus—mucking out homes, comforting the broken, distributing supplies, and offering hope in the middle of crisis.”
Meanwhile, Doug Stringer has been coordinating logistics from Houston by connecting needs and resources. “We’ve got trucks going into San Angelo from Minneapolis and Baltimore, with more resources heading into the area next week from other locations,” he said. Long-time friend Tim Bolton from Lodging Solutions is sending a shower trailer for volunteers and other resources.
As this first week following the flood comes to a close, we continue to pray for the peace of the Hill Country—for comfort to cover grieving families and for strength to sustain all those who are working tirelessly in the field, especially our first responders.
