Signs of horror and of hope were seen by the SCA team that recently travelled to Haiti. With the cholera epidemic in full swing and civil unrest around the elections, it was a challenging time to go – but that is when the tangible love of God is most needed. Somebody Cares has been active in Haiti relief, recovery and rebuilding since the earthquake rocked that island nation in January of 2010.
Our recent team of four ladies went to see how things are progressing, encourage our partner pastor’s and missionaries there, and bring the love of God to the people. The first day was spent helping care for orphans at the Faith, Hope, Love Infant Rescue home as well as checking on the progress of our housing project. With Hurricane Tomas past and more rain imminent, the houses are beginning to go up faster. Families are moving from tents into sturdy shelters and are so thankful!
SCA team with children in Gonaives
Next the team travelled to Gonaives where they ministered in a poverty stricken community of 10,000-12,000 people. Most of the children in the community run around totally naked and often eat mud cookies to fill their empty stomachs. Our team bought loads of peanut butter for the ministry there and helped with a bread distribution to the children. Our missionary friend, Emory, has a vision to establish Jubilee, a prosperous community where education, food and jobs are all available. It is a big vision!
A cholera patient brought to Jubilee for care Our team helped care for patients in the makeshift clinic set up in one of the school rooms run by Jubilee. When cholera hit Gonaives, Jubilee was the only place people could turn for help. But without trained medical professionals the volunteers are quickly overwhelmed. Somebody Cares was able to connect a medical team with Jubilee for some short term assistance. We are also looking for on-going medical assistance for the community. All the ladies came home with a passion to continue helping Haiti through
Life is slowly changing for the better as Somebody Cares and other agencies continue to offer assistance. Homes are going up; children are being fed; the sick are finding healing; and pastors are encouraged to press on. Thank you for helping Haiti through Somebody Cares.
