A winter storm with uncharacteristically cold weather, snow, and ice has left hundreds of thousands of residents in Greater Houston and surrounding areas without power and water since Monday. Numerous deaths have sadly been reported from carbon monoxide poisoning as families attempt to get warm in their cars or by using gas grills or other unsafe sources for indoor heat.
The Somebody Cares office and the homes of our Houston-based staff, including the Stringers’ home, are among those without power. But we are still receiving calls and providing referrals to “warming centers.” We will be strategizing with our network of partners on how to provide additional help for water damage from broken pipes and other situations once phone and email service improve.
If you are in Houston and your church or business has back-up generators and has or can open as a warming center, please email that information to us at SomebodyCar[email protected] so we can refer those in need to your site.
Please keep our region and other regions affected by the storm in your prayers. If you have prayer needs you can call or text our 24/7 Prayer Line at 855-459-2273 or please reply to this email. And please use caution and make sure your garage door is open if you need to warm up in your car.
Thank you for caring!
