Our Guest: Paula Mullen

Paula Mullen was born to immigrant parents from Italy. Raised in Western New York State in an Italian neighborhood with other immigrant families from various parts of Italy. Attended Catholic schools from elementary school through college. After college, she worked for one year at the local hometown newspaper. Then went to Long Island to earn a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate to become a paralegal. Worked for a large multinational law firm in Washington, DC for five years. Moved to Virginia and earned a master’s degree from Regent University. Worked in the community with individuals seeking higher education and career goals. Married the love of her life! The last professional job was as Assistant Director of Law and Career Services at a law school–a great combination of love for the legal field and career counseling. Then, launched into the greatest and most demanding “job”–motherhood! Ups and downs, highs and lows that come with the territory of marriage and motherhood. Would she do it again–YES!

Key Thoughts and Scriptures:

James 1:27 NIV Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Proverbs 4:20-22 NLT My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.

  • God revealed Himself to Paula as she pursued knowing Him in the only way she knew.
  • Every morning she and her roommate would pick out a scripture and at the end of the day talk about how that scripture worked out in their lives that day.
  • “And every single scripture that we picked ministered to us and others that whole time.”
  • Paula would pursue studying God’s word and see it come alive in her life every day.

Jeremiah 29:13 NASB And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

  • When we look for God in our days, He reveals Himself to us. He’ll show us that scripture to help us walk in a way that pleases Him that day.
  • Being grounded in good Christian fellowship is critical.
  • “Listen to the Lord. He’s trying to tell you something here.”
  • The Lord prepared her to impact others.
  • Paula loved helping people find their niche.

While Paula pursued what God had called her to do, God was orchestrating things behind the scenes to fulfill the desires of her heart.

  • “I can’t tell you why this is happening, but all I do know is that maybe if you knew, you couldn’t handle it.”
  • “God adopted us and we adopted you.”
  • The Lord used the pain in their lives to bring Paula’s family closer to Him.
  • God doesn’t promise everything’s going to be smooth. You will have troubles.
  • Having a good foundation based on truth can see us through the tough times. Because we all have life experiences that shape us that are not truth.

John 8:32 NIV Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Philippians 4:13 NKJV I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

  • We can do hard things because God is with us.

Paula’s Favorite Woman of the Bible, Mary

Luke 1:26-56 NIV Mary, the mother of Jesus

  • She was an example of adoptive motherhood.
  • Her willingness to say yes and follow Him
  • When Jesus decided to turn water into wine, she told the others, “Do whatever he tells you.” That’s a significant act of trust, especially for a mother who might naturally want to stay in control.
  • Know that you’re in the place where you’re supposed to be.
  • She didn’t know all the answers when God said, you’re going to get pregnant. But she said, be it unto me according to Your will.
  • When we know that God is a good God, we can say that with confidence, knowing that everything’s gonna be okay.

Proverbs 22:17-19 NIV Pay attention and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise;     apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips. So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you today, even you.

Mark 4:24-25 NLT Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.”
