Our Guest: Becky Watt

Becky Watt has been engaged in missions to unreached peoples since 1991. Together with her husband, Eric, they lived in SE Asia for 5 years. Where they trained missionaries from many organizations to spearhead efforts to help make the Good News known among the least reached mega peoples. Simultaneously, for over 30 years she has headed efforts to see the gospel message made available to a persecuted unreached Muslim people group of Central Asia. She serves in Bible translation, digital Scripture distribution, facilitates advocacy initiatives, and helps lead an annual international partnership focused on this people group. Additionally, she gives leadership to Reaching Unreached Nations (RUN) Ministries which she co-founded in 1991, helping to engage churches, mission organizations, and individuals with the needs of unreached peoples who remain cut off from the Good News.

Becky grew up in India, the daughter of medical missionaries.

Married over 40 years, she and Eric have also pastored several churches, most recently in Chesapeake, Virginia, where Eric served as senior pastor for nearly 23 years. They make their home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. They have 2 adult children and 3 grandchildren. Becky holds a BA in Politics from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and an MA in Public Administration.

Key Thoughts and Scriptures:

“How easy it is to live more or less in the enjoyment of God’s free grace and yet not realize that we’re called to fulfill a divinely appointed purpose.” – Duncan Campbell

Ephesians 2:10 NIV For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

“The difference between those who do something and those who don’t is that those who do something — do something.” – Banning Liebscher

  • There are things God has prepared in advance for us to do. Sometimes we stumble upon them and sometimes we plan to get there.
  • Becky recognized that political systems are inherently just a shadow of anything that would be significant or make a real eternal difference.
  • Each one of Becky and her husband’s unique pastoral experiences helped to shape their hearts to love people through God’s eyes.
  • “Lord, is there some way you might have me stand on the shoulders of those folks who’ve gone before me and not let their lives be spent in vain?”
  • What was initially a research project became a life passion.

Psalm 138:8 KJV The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me…

  • There are somewhere in the vicinity of 3,000 people groups that do not have the completed Bible in their language.
  • How do you hear news in a way that grips you? Well, you hear it in the way that your mother spoke to you.
  • Just by sheer time, doing the same things, staying on the same journey, you become an expert much to your own surprise.

Expertise is not born out of some kind of an academic decision, but out of a passion to just be faithful to the call of God.

  • Those serving have loved knowing there was a bigger group of people on the outside who were standing with them, holding up their arms, bringing resources and expertise.

Proverbs 31:8 CEB Speak out on behalf of the voiceless…

  • Furthermore, God uses everything in our lives for His purpose.

Becky advises us to start with what sets our hearts on fire.

  • Ask God to stir up that flame that’s been in your heart.
  • Your availability is key, not even your skillset, because He can develop that, but your willingness to say yes to His assignment.
  • Do a little research, find out some organizations that are involved in that area, come alongside, and start humbly.
  • It’s that determination to stay after it and just say, “God use my life, however You will and help me to glorify You in this area.”
  • Those of us who’ve been on the journey a little longer need to find room for new people to come alongside because we need each other. Nobody has the whole answer.

Becky’s favorite woman in the Bible is the Shunammite woman, whose story is told in 2 Kings 4:8-37 NIV and 2 Kings 8:1-6 NIV.

  • Life hit hard and she didn’t stay stuck.
  • She was just a woman set on seeing God’s man come about and bring life back into her dead child’s body.
  • The woman was anchored in God and wasn’t looking for human consolation.
  • She just embodied courage and strength.
  • And she knew how to conduct herself in front of the king.

Psalm 37:23 NLT  The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.

  • The One who created us for a purpose will direct our steps into that purpose as we follow Him.
  • Also, God designed you perfectly for the purpose He has prepared in advance for you. So you don’t need to worry or fret, just listen to His voice and follow it.

Isaiah 58:11-12 NIV The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
